December 11th is Mountain
December 11th is Mountain Day. Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2003, this day aims to raise awareness about the importance of mountains for the environment, biodiversity and the communities that depend on them. Mountains cover about 27% of the Earth's surface and provide fresh water, food and energy for a significant portion of the world's population. Each year the day highlights a specific theme, promoting discussions on the conservation of mountain ecosystems, the challenges faced by the populations living in these regions and the need for sustainable actions to protect these fragile environments.
