December 4th is Multiple Sclerosis
December 4th is Multiple Sclerosis Day in Portugal. It is a chronic, inflammatory and degenerative disease of the central nervous system, which usually manifests itself between the ages of 20 and 40, and affects more women. It is estimated that the condition affects around 2.5 million people worldwide, including approximately 8,000 in Portugal. Symptoms include fatigue, changes in gait, numbness and balance problems, resulting in loss of functional abilities. National Multiple Sclerosis Day, celebrated on December 4th, aims to raise awareness of the disease, emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis and treatment. Brain atrophy, a common consequence of multiple sclerosis, can worsen cognitive and motor symptoms. Cognitive rehabilitation is essential to help patients cope with cognitive decline and maintain an active life.
