December 3rd is Basque Language
December 3rd is Basque Language Day. The date was established in 1949 by the Basque Studies Society (Eusko Ikaskuntza), in collaboration with the government of the Basque Country, to promote the Basque language, known as Euskera, and increase its visibility and preservation. The choice of the day is a tribute to Saint Francis Xavier, a missionary and saint born in the Basque region of Navarre, who was a speaker of Euskera. The date symbolizes pride and defense of the language, which is one of the oldest languages in Europe and has an unknown origin, not being related to any other language on the continent.
