December 2nd is Samba
December 2nd is Samba Day. The date was officially established in 2008, through Law No. 11,624, in honor of the rhythm that is one of the most representative cultural expressions of Brazil. The origin of samba dates back to the beginning of the 20th century, especially in the Afro-Brazilian communities of Rio de Janeiro. It is a musical genre that combines African, indigenous and European influences, evolving over the years into various forms, such as samba de roda, samba-enredo and pagode. The day was chosen in honor of the famous composer and samba singer Noel Rosa, who was born on this date in 1910. Noel is considered one of the great icons of samba and played a fundamental role in popularizing the genre.
