December 1st is Numismatist
December 1st is Numismatist 's Day and honors professionals who study coins, paper money and medals. The date was chosen because it coincides with the celebration of Saint Eligius, the patron saint of numismatists, and also marks the coronation of Dom Pedro I, when the first coin of independent Brazil was issued. Numismatics in Brazil began to develop in the 19th century, driven by the aristocracy and the interest of Emperor Dom Pedro II. After the end of the Empire, numismatic production was restricted to museums, but began to expand with the creation of numismatic fairs and societies. Julius Meili is considered one of the main precursors of Brazilian numismatics. Currently, although not as popular as in other countries, Brazil has organized groups of collectors and literature on the subject.
