December 1st is Christmas Lights
December 1st is Christmas Lights Day in the United States, and celebrates the beginning of the Christmas season, marking the moment when Christmas lights are officially turned on in cities, homes, and public places throughout the country. The date is linked to the tradition of decorating with lights during Christmas, something that became popular in the United States in the late 19th century, when the first electric lights began to be used on Christmas trees. Thomas Edison, in 1880, made the first public display of electric lights, and his assistant, Edward H. Johnson, was the first to decorate a Christmas tree with electric bulbs in 1882. Until then, trees had been decorated with candles, which posed a significant fire risk. Christmas lights have since become a central symbol of Christmas celebrations, representing hope, joy, and spiritual enlightenment.
