November 30th is Land Statute
November 30th is Land Statute Day and celebrates the creation of the Land Statute, a fundamental law for agrarian reform and rural development in Brazil. The Land Statute was established by Law No. 4,504, sanctioned on November 30, 1964, during the government of President Castello Branco, in the context of the military regime. This law was created with the objective of promoting agrarian reform in the country, organizing land use and the distribution of rural property. The legislation was a response to growing social pressure for changes in the countryside, where a large concentration of land in the hands of a few owners (large estates) predominated, while a significant part of the rural population lived in precarious conditions. Although it was not fully implemented, the Land Statute is considered an important milestone in the history of agrarian policies in Brazil.
