November 22nd is Lebanese Immigration
November 22nd is Lebanese Immigration Day, an official date in São Paulo. Immigration began in the colonial period, when Arabs came to Brazil as traders fleeing Ottoman rule. The first large wave of Lebanese arrived in the 1880s, following the visit of Emperor Dom Pedro II in 1876, who opened the doors of Brazil to these immigrants. They were instrumental in the development of areas such as 25 de Março, Cantareira and Avenida do Estado, known today as the Shopping Circuit. Most worked as peddlers, traveling with goods on credit and advertising their wares with rattles.
