November 21st is Spina Bifida
November 21st is Spina Bifida Day, and aims to raise awareness about this condition, which is the second leading cause of physical disability in childhood, right after cerebral palsy. Spina bifida occurs due to incomplete development of the spinal cord and can cause several complications, such as motor disabilities and neurological problems. In Mexico, the prevalence is 4.9 per 10,000 births, with 75% of cases related to spina bifida. The most common types include spina bifida occulta, meningocele, and myelomeningocele. To prevent the condition, it is recommended that women of reproductive age consume folic acid daily, especially before and during pregnancy. The day seeks to promote information about the disease and the importance of prevention.
