November 20th is Transgender Day of Remembrance
November 20th is Transgender Day of Remembrance . This day was created to honor the memory of trans and gender non-conforming people who have lost their lives due to violence, discrimination, and hate. The origin of the day dates back to 1998, when transgender activist Gwendolyn Ann Smith created Transgender Day of Remembrance to honor Rita Hester, a trans woman who was murdered in 1998 in Boston. Since then, International Transgender Day of Remembrance has expanded globally, serving as a moment of reflection and awareness about the violence faced by the trans community. The day highlights not only cases of homicide, but also the various forms of violence, discrimination, and marginalization that trans people face on a daily basis.
