November 11 is Armistice
November 11 is Armistice Day, and marks the anniversary of the end of World War I. The armistice was signed between the Allied forces and Germany, and came into effect at 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918, symbolizing the end of hostilities at “the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.” It has its origins in the signing of the treaty that ended World War I. The armistice was agreed upon after years of intense fighting and millions of deaths. Representatives of the Allied forces and Germany met in the Forest of Compiègne in France to sign the document, which marked a victory for the Allies and brought peace after four years of devastating war. In 1919, exactly one year after the armistice, French President Georges Clemenceau declared November 11 as Armistice Day, honoring all the soldiers who had served and given their lives during the war.
