November 17th is Prematurity
November 17th is Prematurity Day. This date was established to raise awareness about the challenges faced by premature babies and their families. Prematurity is defined as the birth of a baby before the 37th week of gestation, and is one of the main causes of infant mortality and long-term health complications. The initiative to create this day arose in 2008, during a meeting of prematurity experts in the city of Milan, Italy. The date was proposed as a way to promote education about prematurity and support families dealing with the difficulties associated with premature birth. Since then, several health organizations around the world, such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the European League Against Prematurity, have promoted activities and campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of caring for maternal and child health and reducing prematurity rates.
