November 7th Canillita Day in Argentina
November 7th Canillita Day in Argentina . The date honors newspaper vendors, or “canillitas,” as they are known in the country. These workers play an important role in distributing newspapers and magazines, and are historical figures in the dissemination of news and information on the streets of Argentine cities. The origin of the term “canillita” comes from a play by Uruguayan writer Florencio Sánchez, entitled Canillita, written in 1902. The term, which refers to the character of a young man with thin legs (the shins) who sold newspapers to survive, ended up becoming synonymous with newspaper vendors. In recognition of the work of these professionals, Canillita Day was officially established in 1947 by then-president Juan Domingo Perón.
