November 6, the feast day of Saint Nuno de Santa Maria , honors Nuno Álvares Pereira, a Portuguese national hero and saint of the Catholic Church. Born in 1360, he was an important military commander and Constable of Portugal, being instrumental in the Portuguese victory at the Battle of Aljubarrota, which guaranteed the country's independence. After his military life, Nuno became a Carmelite friar at the Convent of Carmo in Lisbon, adopting the name Frei Nuno de Santa Maria and dedicating himself to charity. In 2009, he was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI, being recognized for his faith and service to Portugal.
