November 5th is Culture and Science Day in Brazil . This date was created by Law No. 12,348, on December 15th, 2010, with the aim of recognizing and valuing the importance of culture and science in society. The choice of the day is a tribute to personalities who contributed significantly to Brazilian culture and science, such as the physician, educator and scientist Oswaldo Cruz, who was born on this day in 1872. He is known for his research on diseases such as yellow fever and bubonic plague, in addition to having been an important defender of public health in Brazil.
