November 5th is Portuguese Language Day in Brazil , in honor of the writer and politician Ruy Barbosa, who was born on this date in 1849 and is recognized for his studies on the language. This day was established by Law No. 11,310, of June 12th, 2006, and highlights Portuguese as the fifth most spoken language in the world. São Paulo is the city with the largest concentration of Portuguese speakers, and is home to the Museum of the Portuguese Language. The language is also celebrated in other Portuguese-speaking countries, which promote cultural activities on this date. In addition, Portuguese Language Day is celebrated on May 5th, and in Portugal, June 10th is reserved for Portugal Day, in honor of the poet Luís de Camões, who died on this day in 1579.
