April 18 is Amateur Radio Day
April 18 is Amateur Radio Day, which celebrates the founding of the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU), created in 1925 in Paris. The amateur radio service is focused on intercommunication and technical study by authorized persons, acting for non-commercial purposes. Radio amateurs pioneered the use of the high frequency (HF) spectrum for global communications, leading to the creation of the IARU to protect their interests. The International Radiotelegraph Convention of 1927 guaranteed recognized frequency bands, and the IARU continues to expand these allocations. Currently, the IARU has more than 160 member societies in three regions: Europe, Africa and the Middle East; the Americas; and Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific. The organization is recognized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
