November 8, Intersex Solidarity
November 8, Intersex Solidarity Day, was created to raise awareness of the issues and challenges faced by intersex people, as well as to promote respect, inclusion and rights for this community. The choice of the date of November 8 as Intersex Solidarity Day is linked to the birthday of Herculine Barbin, a 19th-century French intersex person who, through her memoirs, became a symbol of awareness about intersex experiences. Herculine was assigned female at birth, but after a reclassification in adulthood, was legally recognized as male. Her memoirs, published posthumously, shed light on the complex experiences of intersex individuals and are often cited in debates about gender and identity.
