November 25th
November 25th is the Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women . This date was established by the United Nations (UN) in 1999 to raise awareness about gender-based violence and promote measures to eradicate it. The choice of November 25th refers to the murder of the Mirabal sisters (Patria, Minerva and Maria Teresa), three political activists from the Dominican Republic who were brutally murdered in 1960 for opposing the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. The sisters, known as "Las Mariposas" (The Butterflies), became symbols of the fight against oppression and gender-based violence. Their legacy was fundamental in recognizing the need to combat violence against women worldwide.
