November 5 Bonfire Night , also known as Guy Fawkes Night
November 5 Bonfire Night , also known as Guy Fawkes Night , is a celebration that has its roots in British history and is marked by bonfires, the burning of dolls, and a variety of festivities. Bonfire Night can be traced back to 1605, when Guy Fawkes and a group of conspirators attempted to blow up the British Parliament in a plot known as the Gunpowder Plot. The aim of the plot was to assassinate King James I and restore a Catholic government in England. However, the plot was discovered, and Guy Fawkes was arrested on the night of November 4–5 while guarding barrels of gunpowder that had been placed under Parliament. After their capture, Fawkes and his co-conspirators were tried and executed. In gratitude for saving the king, Parliament decreed that November 5 would be celebrated annually with feasts and bonfires.
