November 4th is Sudeck Syndrome Awareness
November 4th is Sudeck Syndrome Awareness Day and aims to raise awareness about Sudeck Syndrome, or Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), a chronic pain condition that primarily affects the extremities such as the arms and legs. CRPS is characterized by intense and prolonged pain, extreme tenderness, swelling, and stiffness, usually triggered by trauma or injury. This syndrome is divided into two types: Type I, without confirmed nerve damage, and Type II, which involves a known nerve damage. CRPS is a difficult disease to diagnose, often made by exclusion and based on international criteria, such as the Budapest criteria. The pathology involves multiple factors, including nervous, vascular, and possibly genetic alterations, in addition to being associated with psychological factors, such as depression and anxiety. Common treatments include medications for neuropathic pain, such as antidepressants.
