October 31st is Saci
October 31st is Saci Day. This date was created in 2005, through a law that aims to celebrate Saci Pererê, one of the most iconic figures in Brazilian folklore. Saci is a character known for his one leg, his smoke and his red cap, in addition to being famous for his pranks and his ability to disappear in a cloud of smoke. The origin of the celebration is linked to the appreciation of Brazilian popular culture and the search for the preservation of folkloric traditions. The choice of October 31st also coincides with the eve of All Saints' Day, a date that already has a tradition of festivities and celebrations. The idea is to counterbalance the influence of imported festivals, such as Halloween, by bringing to light the riches of national folklore.
