A Tradition of Memory and Solidarity
November 1st, the day of Bread for God , is a popular tradition celebrated in several regions of Portugal, especially in the regions of Minho and Alentejo, and is also celebrated in some parts of Brazil. The origin of Bread for God Day dates back to ancient practices of veneration and remembrance of the dead, which intensified with the influence of the Catholic Church. The tradition is linked to the belief that, on All Saints' Day, the souls of the deceased visit their families. To honor these souls, communities usually offer food, especially bread and sweets. The expression "Bread for God" refers to the practice of children and young people who, on the eve of All Saints' Day, go around the houses of the neighborhood asking for bread, cakes and sweets in exchange for prayers and blessings for the deceased.
