John Paul II, born Karol Wojtyła, was Pope from 1978 until his death in 2005 and is known for his significant role in the Catholic Church and his impact on the world, including his fight against communism in Eastern Europe, his emphasis on human dignity and human rights, and his work to promote interreligious dialogue. During his papacy, he made apostolic journeys around the world, visiting more than 120 countries and establishing a personal connection with many of the faithful. He is also recognized for his canonization of several saints and for his promotion of youth, being the founder of World Youth Day.
