October 17th is Vaccination
October 17th is Vaccination Day, a date created by the Ministry of Health to highlight the importance of vaccines in disease control and epidemic prevention. Vaccines, which consist of immunizing agents derived from weakened or killed viruses and bacteria, are essential for protecting public health, helping to prevent diseases such as smallpox, polio, measles, among others. The first vaccine was developed in 1796 by Edward Jenner, who immunized a child against smallpox. In Brazil, the smallpox vaccine arrived in 1804. Although some adverse reactions may occur after vaccination, they are generally mild and temporary. The National Immunization Program (PNI), created in 1973, has been essential in ensuring the immunization of the Brazilian population, contributing to the eradication of diseases and the reduction in the incidence of several illnesses.
