October 24th is World Polio
October 24th is World Polio Day. This day was established to raise awareness about poliomyelitis (polio), a highly contagious viral disease that can cause paralysis, and to promote eradication efforts worldwide. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent polio. Oral polio vaccine (OPV) and inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) are essential to ensure population immunity. Thanks to global vaccination efforts, polio has been eradicated in many parts of the world, but there are still areas where the disease persists. Eradicating polio is a global public health goal. Since 1988, when the Global Polio Eradication Initiative was launched, there has been a reduction of more than 99% in polio cases worldwide.
