October 20th is Mastocytosis and Mast Cell Disease
October 20th is Mastocytosis and Mast Cell Disease Day to raise awareness of these rare diseases, caused by the excess or over-activation of mast cells, cells of the immune system. Diagnosis of these conditions can be time-consuming and difficult, since symptoms resemble allergic reactions and arise in response to factors such as medications, insect bites, foods, and emotional stress. Mastocytosis can be classified into cutaneous mastocytosis, which affects the skin, and systemic mastocytosis, which involves multiple body systems. Symptoms vary, including allergic reactions, hives, itching, and abdominal pain. Treatment involves avoiding specific triggers and prescribing medications that stabilize mast cells.
