October 19th is the feast day of Saint Peter of Alcantara . Saint Peter of Alcantara, born in 1499, was a Spanish Franciscan friar known for his life of austerity, prayer and penance. He is the patron saint of Brazil and is also venerated as the patron saint of guards and watchmen. Saint Peter of Alcantara is recognized for his profound mystical experiences and for the reform he helped implement in the Franciscan Order. His spirituality inspired important figures, such as Saint Teresa of Ávila, with whom he had a relationship of friendship and support in the reform of Carmel. He was canonized in 1669 by Pope Clement IX. In Brazil, in addition to being the patron saint, his name is present in several cities and religious institutions, and the date of his commemoration is marked by masses and celebrations dedicated to his memory and spiritual legacy.
