October 10 is the feast day of Saint Daniel Comboni , named after the Italian saint who dedicated his life to the evangelization and service of the people of Africa. Saint Daniel Comboni was born on March 15, 1831, in Limone sul Garda, Italy, and died on October 10, 1881, in Sudan. He was a missionary and the founder of the Comboni Missionaries of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a religious congregation dedicated to missionary work on the African continent. Comboni is known for his tireless devotion to the cause of the evangelization of Africa, pioneering the spiritual and material care of Africans at a time when the continent faced enormous challenges, including slavery and colonization. He firmly believed that the regeneration of Africa should be carried out by Africans themselves, and he dedicated his life to the education, formation, and empowerment of local communities. He was canonized by Pope John Paul II on October 5, 2003.
