Saint Benedict 's Day is celebrated in Brazil
Saint Benedict 's Day is celebrated in Brazil on October 5th and, in some regions, on April 4th. Known as the Black Saint, he is venerated especially among Afro-descendant communities for his humility and charity. Born in 1526 in Sicily, Italy, into a family of former slaves, Benedict stood out for his life of prayer and faith, joining the Franciscan order. Despite racism, he became guardian and superior of the convent, and is remembered for his miracles and exemplary leadership. Patron saint of cooks and humble people, his devotion is strong in Brazil, with festivals and processions, especially in Aparecida (SP) and Maranhão.
