European Depression Day is celebrated annually on October 1st
European Depression Day is celebrated annually on October 1st , created by the European Depression Association with the aim of demystifying depression and raising awareness about its prevention and treatment. The date seeks to highlight the seriousness of this mental illness, which is the main cause of suicide in the world. The European Depression Association brings together organizations, patients and researchers from 19 European countries, promoting awareness-raising initiatives. The World Health Organization estimates that more than 350 million people in the world suffer from depression, 50 million of which are in Europe alone. In Portugal, around 8% of the population suffers from the disease, placing the country among those with the highest number of diagnosed cases. Treatment for depression varies according to severity and causes, and may include medication, psychotherapy, electroconvulsive therapy and alternative therapies.
