The International Day of the African Child
The International Day of the African Child is celebrated on June 16th. This date was established to honor black students from Soweto, South Africa, who were killed on June 16, 1976 during a peaceful protest against the imposition of teaching the Afrikaans language in schools, a policy of the apartheid regime. These students courageously stood up in defense of their language and culture, and their courage and sacrifice inspired the world to recognize the rights of African children and fight against racial discrimination and injustice. It highlights the importance of protecting and promoting the rights of African children, guaranteeing them access to education, health, safety and opportunities for a better future. It is an occasion to celebrate the resilience, determination and potential of African children, and to renew our commitment to creating a world where all children can grow and thrive freely.
