Saint Augustine of Canterbury's Day is celebrated on May 27th . Saint Augustine was a Benedictine monk who became the first Archbishop of Canterbury in the late 6th and early 7th centuries. He is considered the "Apostle of the English" for his significant contribution to the Christianization of England. Augustine was sent by Pope Gregory I to evangelize the Anglo-Saxons in Britain. He founded Canterbury Cathedral and established the Christian Church in England. His day is celebrated mainly by the Catholic Church and the Anglican Church in recognition of his crucial role in the history of Christianity in England.
