The Monastery of Saint Catherine of Siena
History of Flávia Rosa - Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil

The Monastery of Saint Catherine of Siena, also known as the Convent of Saint Catherine, located in Arequipa, Peru, was founded in 1579 and was intended for the daughters of the city's prominent families. With an area of 20,426 m², the complex, built like a city, underwent reconstruction due to earthquakes. At its peak, it housed around 500 women. After years of mystery, part of the convent was opened to the public in 1970, attracting visitors with renovations such as flower-filled streets and frescoes. The solid architecture and bold solutions, along with pieces of art such as a baroque altar and paintings from the Cusqueña School, stand out in the place. The cloister of Blessed Sor Ana de los Ángeles is an attraction, and the convent is surrounded by a wall of ashlars that marks the division between the internal and external world.
