Brackets [ ] are punctuation marks used to include additional information within a text, mainly in quotations, explanations or corrections.
Main uses of brackets:
Inserting explanations or clarifications in quotations:
Machado de Assis wrote: "Ele [Bentinho] nunca desconfiou da verdade."
(Here, brackets were used to clarify that "ele" refers to Bentinho.)
Indicating omitted passages in quotations (with ellipses inside the brackets):
"A vida é uma peça de teatro […] e não permite ensaios." (Excerpt was shortened to keep the focus on the main idea.)
Making observations or corrections within a text:
O aluno escreveu: "Ela estava meia [meio] cansada." (Correction of the word "meia" to "meio.")
Indicate comments or reactions in transcribed texts:
O entrevistado disse: "Eu sempre fui um bom aluno [risos]." (Shows that the person laughed while speaking.)
