It can be used: to define words in the dictionary, showing their etymology, example: Amor- (ô). [From lat. amore.] 1. Feeling that predisposes someone to wish the good of others, or of something: love of neighbor; love for the artistic heritage of his land. (New Aurélio Dictionary); to insert symbols and terms that do not belong in the text, for example: Machado de Assis wrote many letters to Sílvio Dinarte [pseudonym of the Viscount of Taunay], with whom he was very friendly.; to indicate omitted parts in the transcription of a text, for example: “[…] and a thing is established that we can call — solidarity of human annoyance.” and to include comments and annotations in already published texts.
