The dog only became Botafogo's official mascot in 2008

The dog only became Botafogo's official mascot in 2008, when the team launched the characters Biriba and Biruta, but the animal had already been considered a symbol by the fans for decades. The story began in the 1948 Carioca Championship, when the dog Biriba, belonging to the player Macaé, invaded the field in celebration of a goal. From then on, the president of the club at the time, Carlito Rocha, would take Biriba to every game to bring luck to the team.
