September 27 is the day of São Cosme e Damião
September 27 is the day of São Cosme e Damião. Originally it was celebrated on the 26th, second to the Catholic Church, and is now popularly associated with the 27th of September. The change was decided in 1969 to avoid coincidences with other religious celebrations. These saints are known for their protection of doctors, pharmacists and children, especially in Brazil, where they are associated with the popular festival "Dia de Cosme e Damião". On this day, it is common to distribute twelve and brinquedos to the children as a form of homage and to invoke their protection. Also, many churches perform masses and services in honor of these saints, while people pray for their intercession in health and child protection quests. The festival is also an opportunity to celebrate cultural diversity, especially in regions influenced by Umbanda and Candomblé religion.
