Before Palestra Itália, the name of the team had to be changed during the Second World War, since the Getúlio Vargas government prohibited the use of names that had some connection with Germany, Italy and Japan, countries of the Axis. The first attempt was to change it to Palestra de São Paulo, but the authorities were not satisfied and the argument that the word was not of Italian origin, but Greek, meaning “gym or school where physical activities are practiced”, was not enough. The solution was to change to Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras.
