Palmeiras was founded on August 26, 1914 as Palestra Itália to be the team of the Italian colony, very strong in São Paulo at the beginning of the 20th century. The team was born from the desire of 3 young people to create a sports association that represented the Italian community that lived in São Paulo. They published an invitation in the newspaper to call other interested parties and, on August 26, 1914, they founded Palestra Itália, in a meeting in the center of the city.

Before Palestra Itália, the name of the team had to be changed during the Second World War, since the Getúlio Vargas government prohibited the use of names that had some connection with Germany, Italy and Japan, countries of the Axis. The first attempt was to change it to Palestra de São Paulo, but the authorities were not satisfied and the argument that the word was not of Italian origin, but Greek, meaning “gym or school where physical activities are practiced”, was not enough. The solution was to change to Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras.
