The name R2-D2 came from the post-production of the film Summer Madness (1973). It was the sound editor who asked George Lucas for "R2-D2", which means "Reel 2, Dialog 2", that is, Reel #2 of the Second Dialogue. The abbreviation pleased Lucas, who wrote it down for future use. However, although in early versions of the script R2-D2 spoke normally, the lines were removed, however C-3PO's reactions to the dialogue were retained.
