The Hato Caves are show caves that have been accessible to the public since 1991. These marine coral limestone caves were formed over millions of years, exposed to atmospheric corrosion and karst processes after sea levels fell. Located on the north coast of the island, north of Willemstad, the caves are organized into tiers and terraces, with the Hato Caves uniquely situated on the third terrace. The caves were inhabited by the Arawak Amerindians and Caiquetio Indians, who also used them as burial places. Additionally, the caves served as hiding places for fugitive slaves before the abolition of slavery.
