April 24 is Samurai Day
April 24 is Samurai Day, a date that pays homage to the rich tradition of Japanese warriors and highlights their cultural influence in Brazil. The celebration was established in 2005 by the São Paulo City Council, on the initiative of then-councilman William Woo, in honor of the birthday of Sensei Jorge Kishikawa, founder of the Niten Cultural Institute and the main promoter of Kobudo in the country.
The Niten Cultural Institute, founded in 1993, has played a fundamental role in the preservation and dissemination of traditional Japanese martial arts in Brazil, promoting the values of Bushido, such as honor, discipline and courage. The date has also been made official in other Brazilian states and municipalities, such as Rio de Janeiro, Ribeirão Preto, Campinas, Paraná, Amazonas and Santa Catarina.
