April 24 is Chimarrão
April 24 is Chimarrão Day, a date that pays homage to one of the most emblematic traditions of southern Brazil. Established by State Law No. 11,929 of 2003, the day also celebrates barbecue, both recognized as official symbols of Rio Grande do Sul.
The choice of the date refers to the founding of the first Center of Gaucho Traditions (CTG), the 35 CTG, on April 24, 1948, in Porto Alegre. Chimarrão, a drink made with yerba mate and hot water, has its origins in the practices of the Guarani indigenous people and was incorporated into the Gaucho culture as a symbol of hospitality and coexistence.
In addition to its cultural value, chimarrão is recognized for its health benefits, being rich in antioxidants and aiding digestion. The drink is traditionally consumed in groups of friends and family, strengthening the social and cultural ties of the region.
