April 23 is Book and Copyright Day
April 23 is Book and Copyright Day, a UNESCO initiative created in 1995 to promote the pleasure of reading, value books and protect the rights of authors. The date was chosen because it is symbolic in world literature: in 1616, Miguel de Cervantes, William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, three great names in universal literature, died.
The celebration highlights the role of books as bridges between cultures and generations, and as essential tools for education, freedom of expression and the preservation of linguistic diversity. In 2025, UNESCO continues to emphasize the importance of the International Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022–2032), reinforcing the commitment to cultural diversity and multilingualism.
