April 21st is the anniversary of Brasília
April 21st is the anniversary of Brasília, the date that marks the official inauguration of the federal capital in 1960. Designed to be the political center of the country, Brasília was born from the dream of bringing power inland and boosting Brazil's development away from the coast. The city was conceived by Juscelino Kubitschek, then president of the Republic, and planned by urban planner Lúcio Costa and architect Oscar Niemeyer.
Listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987, Brasília is a landmark of modern architecture and urbanism, known for its wide avenues, bold buildings and its airplane-shaped master plan. With just over six decades, the city is a symbol of innovation and planning, in addition to being home to the main bodies of the Three Powers: Executive, Legislative and Judiciary.
On April 21, a holiday in the Federal District, civic celebrations, shows, cultural fairs and sporting activities are held, involving residents and tourists.
