April 21 is the Civil Police
April 21 is the Civil Police Day in Brazil. The date was established by Decree-Law No. 9,208, of April 29, 1946, as a tribute to the agency responsible for the safety of the population and maintenance of public order.
The choice of April 21 refers to the execution of Tiradentes (Joaquim José da Silva Xavier), in 1792, considered the patron saint of the Brazilian police. In addition to Civil Police Day, April 21 is also the day of the Military Police and Tiradentes Day.
The Civil Police is responsible for investigating crimes, gathering evidence and supporting the judicial system in enforcing the law. Each Brazilian state has a Civil Police unit, totaling 27 entities in the country (26 states and the Federal District).
In some regions, such as the state of São Paulo, Civil Police Day is celebrated on September 30, as established by State Law No. 12,259, of February 15, 2006.
