April 19 is the feast day of Saint Emma
April 19 is the feast day of Saint Emma, a figure of great inspiration for the Christian faith. Born into a noble family in Saxony, Saint Emma was marked from a young age by her deep devotion to God and her commitment to others. While still young, she married Count Ludger, but was widowed shortly after. From that moment on, she decided to live a life of renunciation, dedicated exclusively to prayer and service to those most in need.
Over the course of more than forty years, Saint Emma donated all her possessions, founded convents and abbeys, and became a reference for charity and spirituality. She believed that true love for God is expressed through compassion, and so she welcomed the poor, the sick, and the marginalized, offering them shelter, food, and care. Her life was a testament to service, forgiveness and dedication to others.
When she died in 1045, Saint Emma had nothing left, but she left a legacy of holiness and generosity. Her tomb was opened many years later and, curiously, her body was in dust, except for her right hand, which was still intact. This symbol, represented by many as an image of Saint Emma with bread in her hands, reflects the power of charity in her life.
