April 19, the day of Saint Expeditus
April 19, the day of Saint Expeditus, the date attracts thousands of faithful around the world, especially in Brazil, where his devotion is quite popular. Known as the saint of urgent, just and impossible causes, Saint Expeditus is invoked by those who need quick answers in moments of affliction, difficult decisions or situations with no way out.
Although little is known about his life with historical precision, it is believed that Expeditus was a Roman soldier converted to Christianity and martyred in the 4th century, for refusing to renounce his faith. Tradition has it that, at the moment of his conversion, the devil appeared in the form of a crow shouting crás (which in Latin means “tomorrow”), trying to postpone his decision. Expedito is said to have crushed the crow by saying “hodie” (“today”), reaffirming his immediate faith.
His symbol is precisely a soldier with a cross that reads hodie , reminding us that we should not put off until later what we can do now — one of the central messages of his devotion.
On April 19, churches celebrate special masses and the faithful make promises, pray and go on pilgrimages. Saint Expedito represents quick faith, trust and action, being a spiritual refuge for those seeking urgent solutions and miracles.
