April 19 is the day of the Brazilian Army
April 19 is the day of the Brazilian Army, in honor of the First Battle of Guararapes, which took place in 1648, in Pernambuco. This battle marked the union of whites, blacks and indigenous people in the fight against the Dutch invaders, and is considered the birth of the Army as an organized national force.
More than celebrating the creation of a military institution, the date recognizes the historic role of the Army in defending sovereignty, building national identity and supporting the population in times of crisis, such as natural disasters, vaccination campaigns and peacekeeping missions abroad.
With values such as discipline, hierarchy, patriotism and dedication, the Army is one of the three Armed Forces of Brazil, alongside the Navy and the Air Force. It acts in the protection of borders, internal security when requested, and in the preservation of constitutional order.
On Army Day, ceremonies, parades, exhibitions and educational activities are held in barracks and schools. The date is also an opportunity to reflect on the role of the Armed Forces in a democratic society, reinforcing respect for the Constitution and civil rights.
