April 10th is World West Syndrome
April 10th is World West Syndrome Day, which aims to raise awareness of this rare and devastating neurological condition that primarily affects children. Also known as Wave and Spasm Syndrome, the syndrome is characterized by involuntary muscle spasms, called "infantile spasms," and abnormal brain wave patterns. These episodes can severely impair a child's motor and cognitive development, resulting in developmental delays.
The day aims not only to raise awareness about the challenges faced by families and patients, but also to highlight the importance of early diagnosis and appropriate treatment. With advances in medicine, diagnosis and treatment of the syndrome have improved, although it is still a difficult condition to treat.
Organizations and support groups use World West Syndrome Day to promote information exchange, support social inclusion, and combat the stigma associated with rare diseases. The day is a milestone in the fight for more support for families and the search for a better life for those affected by the syndrome.
